What is it you desire for in life?
They’re trying to squeeze you into a square.
But you prefer to be just slightly off-white.
You aren’t too sharp and you aren’t really soft.
Perhaps a little pungent for their taste.

Considerate words became hard to find –
Hidden in between all of their comments.
Finding them is like collecting saffron
While searching among a field full of weeds.
Are you that standoff-ish?
Their “kind” words pricked you like thorns on a rose.
Wounds that festered like rot on aloeswood.

But you can turn those wounds into beauty.
You can stay fresh with your hint of sweetness.
And growing into who you’re meant to be
Is discovering life’s true luxury.

Yes, I’m one of those guys that “loved and lost.” Ended up in a bad breakup (on my end). I decided it was time for a new adventure. So I hopped on a flight down to Brazil.

I signed up for a little hiking tour. At first, I was enamored by the intense, spicy scents of the exotic plants and trees. You know me, “The Fragrance Writer:” I loved the smells of the rosewoods and amber-like woods. Until I was caught off guard by a beautiful woman wearing jasmine. I turned and looked – there you were.

You were the interpreter on our tour. Or maybe you were just sent here to help me reinterpret my journey of lost love. Either way, I knew I wasn’t much to look at. I was hoping my favorite vetiver-patchouli cologne would do the trick to win you over as we chatted. Or maybe it was just my humor. . . Definitely not my poetic skills ;-).

But you had the most beautiful eyes I had ever seen. They were so distinct – green, like a mango. They stole the show. And when I looked into those mango-green eyes. . . I knew. . . I was ready for new love. . .one that proved to be long-lasting.

If I could, I would love you like you want
But I just need some time to readjust.
If I could, I’d soak my soul in this bath
Where soap and suds can wash away the dust.

You’re a delicate orange and citrus tree
The ylang-ylang vines wrap around you,
Gentle, pink rose bushes bloom from your roots.
I’m just vetiver living in your shade.

Opportunity won’t last forever;
Love can pass by while I try to adjust.
So if my timid mind “loses the day,”
Don’t let my heart know the love that it lost.
