Examining every move on our date,
I studied you sitting opposite me.
I had a slice of vanilla-rum cake.
You were content with cinnamon candies.

I now had courage to say how I felt,
But thoughts were like tobacco in my mouth.
My stomach only became more upset
The longer I refused to spit them out.

I knew my words would be strong and shocking,
But I had hoped they would settle sweetly.
“. . .I love You. . .”
But your affection was like your candy.
Before long, it dissolved away from me.

A side effect of false confidences –
Words still linger in the back of your mouth.
But don’t think that I need condolences.
Because now I’m fearless to speak my heart!

If I could, I would love you like you want
But I just need some time to readjust.
If I could, I’d soak my soul in this bath
Where soap and suds can wash away the dust.

You’re a delicate orange and citrus tree
The ylang-ylang vines wrap around you,
Gentle, pink rose bushes bloom from your roots.
I’m just vetiver living in your shade.

Opportunity won’t last forever;
Love can pass by while I try to adjust.
So if my timid mind “loses the day,”
Don’t let my heart know the love that it lost.

Sweep me off my feet, baby.
Let your riptides pull me out
Far from these Greek beaches.
Life is too short not to love.

You always wanted ambergris.
I’m just your cheaper imitation.
So spit me out,
Bleach me in your golden citrus sun,
Cure me in your water’s salts,
And leave me stranded in the sands.

I’ll be that gray stone
Loved by another.
You’ll be that beautiful Medusa
Forever lost in blue seas.
